All across cottage country, on frozen ponds, in community rinks and in state-of-the-art arenas, folks are playing our favourite national pastime, hockey. We believe there is no better way to celebrate the sport than to play it on the pond!

Background

Otter Lake is a lake in the municipality of Seguin, Parry Sound District in Central Ontario, Canada. Otter Lake was originally named ‘Nigge-Cu-Bing’ (Lake of Many Otters) by the original First Nations inhabitants

There are several segments to the lake. The “Long Arm” is a long, narrow portion which goes to the east. The “Little Long Arm” protrudes to the west. The “Little Otter” part is to the north, separated from the rest
of the lake by the Otter Lake Narrows.

The unincorporated places and railway points of Otter Lake and Holmur are at the narrows and on the north side of the lake respectively.

The water level is controlled by a dam at the outflow to the Boyne River at the Little Otter portion of the lake. Otter Lake also lies within the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve (GBBR) which is a globally-important region designated by UNESCO in 2004.

Over 400 cottages/residents currently exist on Otter Lake, as well as four resorts, one marina and one public beach.

The Opportunity

The pond hockey event will be expected to have 60 + teams (max 8 players per team) with an audience of over 1,000 attending during the weekend. There are four divisions: 19+ Open, women, corporate, and + 40 mens.

Ice crews will spend about 10 days creating 12 rinks with 24,000 ft² of ice on each rink – 288,000 Sq Ft of ice. On average the ice crew moves about 2 tons of snow per rink – 24 tons!

Trophy being donated by Wasauksing First Nation artist.

The Objectives

  1. Bring your friends and family come watch your games, and tell them to get loud whenever your team scores.
  2. Have fun! If you aren’t having fun then you’re missing the point.

Support for Youth

Funds raised through our Welcome Reception on Friday February 3, 2023 will be donated to school robotics.

Why Grand Tappattoo in Parry Sound District?

We strategically selected this location for a couple key reasons: Grand Tappattoo is on a small shallow lake meaning it freezes quicker and deeper than most larger bodies of water in cottage country.

If there is an ice surface capable of hosting a hard water event like ours (rather than cancelling), it’s here!

The resort and its facilities are very close to the ice surface allowing teams to access the facility without walking a lot.
Our event takes over the whole resort!
